The Toyota Highlander debuted in 2001 between the Toyota RAV4 and the Toyota 4-Runner in Toyota's SUV lineup. Riding on a modified Toyota Camry platform gave the Toyota Highlander better handling than other pickup truck-based SUVs, thanks to a rigid unibody structure and four-wheel independent suspension. The first generation was offered with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine or a 220 horsepower 3.0-litre V6. Both were paired with a four-speed automatic transmission with snow mode. In 2005 Toyota introduced the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The second-generation Toyota Highlander debuted in 2008 with more space and power. Third-row seating became standard equipment from 2013 onwards.
Bigger and more capable
The third-generation Toyota Highlander debuted in 2014. Now capable of seating eight people, its V6 was paired with a new eight-speed automatic. The Toyota Highlander grew again for the fourth generation, debuting in 2020 and making use of the Toyota New Global Architecture for a better ride and improved handling. The hybrid model is powered by a 2.5-litre inline 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor for a combined 240 horsepower. It's available with front-wheel drive and features a 12.3-inch touchscreen.
