Summary
The Chevrolet Cavalier is a small, stylish car that is best suited for those on a budget. Available as a coupe (two-door), sedan (four-door), convertible and station wagon, you should have no trouble finding a body type that fits your needs. Production of the Chevrolet Cavalier in western markets ended in 2005, so it can be somewhat difficult to get hold of and tricky to maintain. That said, if the vehicle has been well-maintained by its previous owner, the low price point could make it a smart buy.
Safety
The Chevrolet Cavalier's safety features for all generations include daytime running lamps to maximize your vehicles visibility and front airbags to protect you in the event of a crash. Several features are standard or available as add-ons from the 2003 model:
- Standard driver and front passenger front airbags
- Optional side-impact airbags for both driver and passenger
- Optional four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) to prevent skidding on slippery surfaces
- OnStar, a 24/7 service which assists in the event of an emergency, standard across all years and trims
Keep in mind that the Chevrolet Cavalier has a history of numerous recalls. Because of this, you should do your research on the year and model you wish to buy to ensure that there are no red flags as far as safety is concerned.
Interior
In its heyday, the Chevrolet Cavalier had a very modern interior and exterior design. As the last vehicle rolled off the assembly line in 2005, however, the look these days may come off as a little dated. All Chevrolet Cavaliers come standard with cloth-finished and front bucket seats. Upgraded vehicles may include:
- Carpeted front and rear floor mats to protect the floor from dirt and grime
- Power sliding sunroof, allowing you to open the car up during good weather
Technology
Though not equipped with an abundance of modern technology, the Chevrolet Cavalier does have its share of useful features. Air conditioning comes as standard in all models of the Cavalier. Later models of the Cavalier come standard with Chevrolet’s PASSlock theft-deterrent system, a technology that prevents the vehicle from starting unless the proper key is used. Higher trim levels include an AM/FM radio and CD player, so you can blast your favourite tunes while on the go. Other available features you'll be sure to find from 2001 models and onwards include:
- Electronic cruise control to maintain your speed during highway driving
- Power door locks and power windows, giving you fingertip control over your vehicle
- Remote Keyless Entry so that you can access your vehicle with ease, though this was standard on the Z24 as of 1999
Space
The Chevrolet Cavalier comes with either two or four doors. There is enough space to seat five, but some drivers have found it to be a bit of a squeeze. It is possible some of that space went to the trunk, which is surprisingly roomy for a vehicle of its size. The split-folding rear seats is a handy feature if you would like to add even more cargo space.
Comfort
The Chevrolet Cavalier's Ecotec engine offers good fuel economy and low emissions considering the car’s age. Both five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmission versions are available. Upgraded versions of the car come with sport suspension for an extra smooth ride.
