Subaru Impreza WRX STi Summary
The Subaru Impreza WRX STI (now called the Subaru WRX STI), is the high-performance trim of the Subaru WRX. First introduced in 2007, the Subaru WRX STI, which stands for World Rally eXperimental and Subaru Technical International, was based on the Impreza model until 2014, when it became its standalone model. After the split, the hatchback version was no longer available.
This compact racer has a powerful base engine, sporty suspension and six-speed manual transmission. In 2019, the horsepower was increased by 5. Notably, the Subaru WRX STI is not available in automatic transmission.
Subaru Impreza WRX STi Safety
In its first year as a standalone model, the Subaru WRX received the best safety rating in its class. A backup camera was the most predominant safety tech available in its first year. If advanced driver assistance systems are a top priority when looking for a new car, check out the 2016 Subaru WRX STI, when these features were added:
- Rear-cross traffic alert
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Lane-keep assist
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane-departure warning
Subaru Impreza WRX STi Interior
The interior of the Subaru WRX STI boasts comfortable front seats and spacious backseats, though perhaps the middle seat is more appropriate for smaller passengers. Drivers can choose between premium leather or synthetic seats.
Unlike the base trim, the Subaru WRX STI comes with dual-zone a/c.
There are two LATCH connectors in the rear outward-facing seats to safely hook up your child's safety seat.
The dash is built with a combination of hard plastics and soft leather, and the knobs are black with metallic finishes.
Subaru Impreza WRX STi Technology
The infotainment system is straightforward and allows drivers to hook up their smart devices seamlessly, although models built before 2016 have tricky touchscreens. Drivers who really enjoy having wireless connectivity at their fingertips should look at models released from 2016 onwards when Subaru updated their infotainment system.
In 2019, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard across all Subaru WRX trims.
Other technology available includes:
- AM/FM/HD/Satellite radio
- Auxiliary jack
- MP3 Player
- CD Player
- Premium sound system (optional)
Subaru Impreza WRX STi Space
The Subaru WRX STI has roomy, comfortable seats, and adults shouldn't have any trouble sitting in the back row. Some drivers who opt for the Recaro performance front seats (available with limited trim) may find them a bit narrow. As a compact car, the Subaru WRX STI won't ever have as much cargo room as a full-sized sedan. The trunk may not be as roomy as other models in its class, but it's still big enough for a couple of suitcases.
Subaru Impreza WRX STi Comfort
The Subaru WRX STI is built for speed and performance, which does tend to make the ride a little stiff. Its all-wheel drive makes the driver feel more in control over icy terrain. Drivers can also select different drive modes to respond to various weather conditions. The Subaru WRX STI's engine is powerful and has 40 more horsepower than the base model. While all these enhancements tend to consume more fuel, the high-performance engine options offer an exhilarating ride.
