Toyota Supra Safety

For a small hatchback sports car, the Toyota Supra performed quite well in safety ratings. While it may not come with the more modern safety features, the Supra had an excellent brake rating, and its low-slung body meant stability through tight turns. Supra hatchbacks from the late 1980s onward had three-point seat belt harnesses, as well as driver-side airbags. Passenger-side airbags were introduced in the mid-1990s. Most Toyota Supras had four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), enabling faster and more controlled stops in an emergency. Anti-theft security systems were common with many vehicles.

Toyota Supra Interior

Models from the late 1980s and to early 1990s had more of a premium look and feel than their predecessors from the 1970s and early 1980s. While cupholders were still not the norm, beyond a glove compartment and a centre console, the interior of the Supra is uncluttered and allows the driver to stay focused on the drive.

Toyota Supra Technology

One visual trademark of the Toyota Supra’s design was the retractable headlights. The P-type Supra versions in Canada from 1982 forward included headlight washers. Dual power side mirrors were standard in many cars, and other standard features from 1984 forward included: 

• Power windows, mirrors and door locks
• Automatic climate control
• Tilt and telescoping steering wheel so you can adjust it at the exact height and distance that suits you
• An AM/FM stereo, some with a cassette deck and up to five speakers—later versions included a CD player 
• Retractable stereo antennae
• Cloth or optional leather upholstery 
• Air conditioning
• Cruise control

Toyota Supra Space

The front seating in the Toyota Supra was quite typical for a sports coupe of its time. While it is not a particularly tall car, high-cut door openings paired with low-slung seats mean that it is easy to slide into the car. The rear seating is somewhat cramped for passengers, but they’ll likely be enjoying the smooth ride too much to notice. The cargo space is broad but not especially deep, approximately 10 sq. ft.—so helping friends move won't be an option.

Toyota Supra Comfort

The later Toyota Supra models came in two different transmission options, a six-speed manual transmission, along with a four-speed automatic that allows manual shifting. Many drivers felt that automatic transmission was sluggish when compared to the manual. While the standard 3.0 L straight-six engine offered a fair amount of speed, the 2JZ-GTE twin-turbocharged version, made famous in The Fast and The Furious film franchise, is the real star. Some earlier versions had a removable sport-roof panel, known as Targa roof.
