The first Ram truck appeared on the market in 1981, starting its life as a Dodge model. Sporting a ram's head hood ornament and aimed at customers who wanted a rugged, capable truck, early Rams came with alpha-numeric codes denoting two- or four-wheel drive and how much weight they could carry. The 150 meant a half-ton, 250 meant a three-quarter-ton, and 350 meant a one-ton truck. Initially launched with the choice of a six-cylinder or one of two V8 engines, Ram trucks developed a reputation for strength and durability, especially the four-wheel-drive versions which were known as Power Rams.
Ram today
Ram split from Dodge and became a standalone brand in 2009 so Dodge could focus on cars and Ram could concentrate on trucks. The company continues to build full-size light/medium duty pickup trucks in 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 configurations with the numbers denoting the carrying capacities like the first Ram trucks. Since Fiat's takeover of Ram's parent company Chrysler in 2014, the brand has been expanded to include the Italian company's vans, known as the Ram ProMaster. The Dodge Ram's main competitors are the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado.
