Vehicle evolution
Since the first Toyota Tundra was released in 1999, there have been three generations of this powerhouse of a pickup. The first Tundra trucks could be outfitted with a V8 engine offering 245 horsepower and a towing capacity of up to 7,000 lbs. However, they were a bit smaller than their American-made counterparts and better suited to daily use than heavy-duty work. After undergoing a redesign in 2007, Toyota upgraded the size and power of the Tundra. The 2012 Toyota Tundra, part of that second generation, comes in Double Cab or CrewMax configurations, seating up to six. The standard V6 270 hp engine could be upgraded to a V8 381-horsepower engine for a towing capacity of up to 10,400 lbs. With the second-generation redesign, Toyota was able to offer customers a reliable alternative to other full-size trucks, like the Ford F-150.
