Summary
Versatile 4x4 trucks that also have spacious interiors are hard to find, but Chevrolet manages to achieve this with the Avalanche. The last model was produced in 2013, but many are still on the road today. With an all-wheel drive option and standard 5.3 L V8 engine, the Avalanche’s fuel consumption is relatively high, but the vehicle is powerful. A 6 L V8 is also available for 2009+ models for those needing their truck to go further. Despite its power, the Avalanche is easy to handle and great for both on- and off-road driving.
Safety
The Avalanche is equipped with the following standard safety features in all models and generations:
- Driver and passenger airbags—front/rear head airbag and front side airbag
- Four-wheel antilock braking system and Electronic Stability Control for added control and lowered risk of skidding
- Integrated turn signals on side mirrors
- Traction control to ease acceleration and reduce risk on low-friction surfaces
Installing child seats can be a bit difficult in the Avalanche, but it isn't impossible. Moving the front seats forward a little can ease their installation.
Interior
The interiors of the Avalanche’s base trims have common amenities included, such as electric windows, AM/FM satellite radio and front air conditioning (with dual zone air conditioning starting with the 2009 manual model). Heated seats are optional in all Avalanches, and are included in the LTZ top trims starting with the 2009 model. A sunroof is available as an add-on for all 2010+ trims.
Technology
Technology is not the primary focus of the Avalanche. Bluetooth is absent but is partially made up for by the USB ports for Apple/Android connection included in all 2010+ models.
The infotainment media centre is optional for all trims and generations. The rearview camera and GPS navigation can be displayed on the touchscreen.
Space
If cargo space is a priority, the Avalanche is an excellent choice, as it's capable of towing over 3,600 kg. Its 1.6 metre rear bed can also be expanded to 2.5 metres by simply folding the backseat back and lowering the midgate, opening up the cabin for cargo.
Cabin space is also larger than most trucks in its segment, and for a sixth seat, drivers can opt for a three-seat front bench, available in the LS, LT and LTZ models.
Comfort
The versatility of the Avalanche also applies to its comfort, with many options available. Standard features include driver lumbar support, power-adjustable driver’s seat, and adjustable brake and gas pedals that align the pedals to the driver’s height. Other features include:
- Leather interior optional for all models
- Standard rear-wheel drive, optional all-wheel drive
- Off-road package available for 2009+ trims, which include heavy-duty springs and shocks to absorb the bounce of unpaved roads
