Summary
The Chevrolet Tahoe is known as one of the best family SUVs in the 4x4 class due to its spacious interior for passengers and cargo and its long list of safety and convenience features. All models come standard with rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option. Like with all large SUVs, expect to use up more fuel than smaller, less powerful vehicles, though some find the gas mileage particularly inefficient on the Tahoe. While the higher models can be a bit pricey, the base models are a fair price for the class.
Safety
The Chevrolet Tahoe regularly scores well in safety ratings and now comes standard with six airbags around the driver and passenger area. In recent model years, you'll find an array of modern safety features, including:
- Head-Up Display, which presents data on your windshield so you can keep your eyes on the road, available on the Premier trim as of 2017
- Adaptive Cruise Control, optional on the LTZ trim as of 2016
- Lane Departure Warning to ensure you're sticking to your own lane, made available in the 2016 model year
- Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to make lane changes safer, standard on the LT Luxury package in 2014+ models
- Automatic Emergency Braking to help prevent collisions, optional as of 2017
Models as of 2011 come standard with antilock brakes, front-seat side airbags and front parking sensors, which let you know when you are nearing an obstruction.
Interior
The interior is very well appointed and in keeping with Chevrolet’s aim to create a perfect blend of style and utility. Third and fourth generation models had redesigned interiors that featured real wood trim, chrome accents and refreshed door panels and seats. Air conditioning and power windows have been standard since the 1990s models, and heated seats were first offered as an option in 1998. In later models, options include heated and cooled power seats and leather upholstery.
Technology
Over the years, the Chevrolet Tahoe has provided an array of convenience features to keep passengers entertained on long trips. Depending on the trim, optional tech features on later models from 2015 include:
- Chevy MyLink with 8-inch touchscreen
- Bluetooth connectivity and integrated Wi-Fi hot spot
- Multiple USB ports
- Remote keyless entry
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability is standard in the LS as of 2018, and OnStar® & Chevrolet Connected Services come standard on most models. A rearview camera, remote engine start and rear parking assist are available as an optional Convenience package on older models, from 2010.
Space
You don’t have to choose between carrying many passengers or hauling a lot of cargo, as the Chevrolet Tahoe can handle both. There is plenty of legroom and seating for up to nine passengers in the cabin, and the large cargo area can accommodate all of their luggage. The cargo area is 15.3 cubic feet behind its third row, 51.7 cubic feet with the third row folded down, and 94.7 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded down.
Comfort
For a large SUV, the Chevrolet Tahoe rides evenly on its well-engineered suspension and maneuvers easily due to its precise steering. The cabin has good sound-dampening, so the truck is quiet as it rolls along. Chevrolet’s Magnetic Ride Control uses sensors to read and instantly react to changing road conditions, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride.
