Kia Sportage Safety

When it comes to safety, it’s hard to find a better-ranked compact SUV than later-model Sportages. Second-generation models (2004-2010) received only two stars from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but subsequent generations boast stellar safety ratings. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US gave the 2019 Sportage a perfect five-star overall crash test rating. 

Expect to find anti-lock brakes, which prevent wheel lockup, and electronic stability control to stop skidding in models from 2005 and onwards. Recent models from 2018 also include:

• Brake assist for improved braking efficiency
• Blind-spot assist to make the driver aware of approaching vehicles
• Lane-departure warnings to prevent drifting during long journeys

Kia Sportage Interior

Older generations of the Sportage, while offering a layout that’s comfortable for the driver, aren’t especially impressive in terms of modern luxuries—cloth interiors and air conditioning are only on higher trims in models from before 2010. This changes with the most recent generations, however, as LCD touchscreens and satellite radio become base trim features from 2017. Leather seats with heating in the front row are options on the 2019 LX and come standard on the EX and SX Turbo trims.

Kia Sportage Technology

First- (1993-2004) and second-generation models offer little more than in-car radio/stereo systems, with add-ons like remote keyless entry slowly appearing as the years progress. However, the infotainment system present in fourth-generation vehicles is unique for its incorporation of physical controls. Drivers can operate the system either with responsive touch controls or with more traditional buttons and knobs. This is a useful inclusion for those unaccustomed to operating touchscreens while driving. Additional features available in the latest model years, from around 2017, include:

• Six-speaker sound system
• Bluetooth capability
• USB port for charging mobile devices on the go

Kia Sportage Space

While the 2017 Sportage offers 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded, first-generation vehicles are actually superior in this regard with 23.5 cubic feet. This still comes up short in comparison to the cargo capacity of rival compact crossovers on the market. As such, the Sportage is often best suited to those with day-to-day needs rather than heavy hauling.

Kia Sportage Comfort

The Kia Sportage seats five, and both rows of seats boast excellent support and comfort. The front seats offer plenty of space and visibility. The Sportage’s rear seats recline and are roomier than most in its class, as they are equally accommodating for taller passengers.
