Mazda CX-5 Summary
Though only in its second generation, the Mazda CX-5 is already one of the Japanese manufacturer's best sellers. With options for diesel engines, a comfortable and spacious interior and impressive towing capacity, it’s not hard to see why this compact crossover SUV is so popular. A range of engine sizes up to 2.5 L—turbocharged on the most recent model—along with the option between manual and automatic transmission on most vehicles. This makes the Mazda CX-5 a solid choice for families, as well as for commuters who need rough weather capability. And, helpfully, all models are super fuel efficient.
Mazda CX-5 Safety
Starting with the first-generation vehicles produced in 2012, Mazda CX-5s come with at least six airbags, as well as the following standard safety features:
- Dynamic stability control to prevent skidding
- Brake assist to help with unexpected, sudden stops
- Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) so brakes don’t seize up
- Brake force distribution for extra control
Recent models like the 2019 edition offer additional safety aids such as pedestrian detection, radar cruise control to keep pace with traffic and forward obstruction warnings. Lane assist and blind-spot monitoring systems alert you of any fast-approaching vehicles about to enter your blind spot, too
Mazda CX-5 Interior
The CX-5’s interior balances practicality with style. The 40/20/40 three-way split, flat-folding rear seats make it easy to customize the backseat and trunk space to hold extra cargo. First-generation vehicles from 2012 have heated front seats, and newer models from 2017 extend this feature to rear passenger seats, as well. You’ll find air conditioning standard on all recent models, too. The 2019 also has upped the refined design, adding cocoa leather seats and wooden inserts around the cabin. Drivers will find controls and gauges easy to read and reach, and visibility is clear for both drivers and passengers.
Mazda CX-5 Technology
Some of the first-generation CX-5s lack a few technological innovations. The 2012 to 2014 models don’t have touchscreen audio control, for instance—neither does the manual transmission 2016 sports trim version. For standard navigation systems, look to the 2016 GT and GS trims and other newer, higher-trim models. Second-generation vehicles, especially the 2018 and 2019 editions, come with full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility so you can make calls and use your apps on the go. Additionally, a 10-speaker Bose sound system delivers clear sound quality and hard-hitting bass.
Mazda CX-5 Space
There’s room in the CX-5 for four passengers and the driver, plus a very respectable 30.9 cubic feet of trunk space. The rear seats can be folded down on all models as well, creating up to 59.6 cubic feet for large grocery trips or luggage on a weekend away. You’ll find a generous amount of legroom in both front and back, with 41 inches for the driver and front passenger and 39.6 inches for rear passengers.
Mazda CX-5 Comfort
The CX-5 is reputed for its comfortable drive. Drive-wise, all generations of the CX-5 are renowned for their light handling and smooth ride thanks to its six-speed automatic transmission. If you like a quiet ride, though, this might not be the best vehicle choice, especially if you have to commute daily on the highway.
