Overview of the Smart ForTwo

Learn about the Smart ForTwo

Summary

Available in coupe (fixed hood) and convertible body styles, the Smart ForTwo is an iconic vehicle. The subcompact’s small design is optimized for city navigation, with a turning radius ideal for parking and maneuvering in tight spaces. Packed with safety features, the Smart ForTwo is impressively durable despite its pint-sized proportions.

The Smart ForTwo is currently available in four trim levels: Pure, Passion, Prime and Proxy. In 2018, the company discontinued production on the gas-powered ForTwo, replacing it with an all-electric vehicle. Before 2017, the electric drive option was only available in the Prime trim.

Safety

Safety has always been an area of strong focus for the Smart ForTwo. Since 2007, the vehicle’s standard kit comes with five airbags, a driver’s kneebag, as well as driver and passenger head and thorax bags. Additionally, the Smart ForTwo includes on all models:

  • Anti-locking brake system (ABS) to prevent skidding while allowing you to maintain steering control
  • Electronic stability control (ESC) to improve the ForTwo’s stability by detecting skidding

Crosswind Assist, which stabilizes your car from gusts of wind when travelling at high speeds, is available in later model years, around 2016.

The Smart ForTwo features a Tridion steel safety shell—a hemispherical enclosure that forms the bulk of the vehicle’s chassis. This lessens impact thanks to an energy-absorbing crumple zone at the front, allowing the engine to be relocated to the trunk.

Interior

Higher-end models of the Smart ForTwo offer drivers leather upholstery, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and heated seats. Whatever your own budget and needs, all Smart ForTwo variations feature sharp design and quality materials.

Technology

The Smart ForTwo is now available with Electric Drive so that you may enjoy eco-friendly, zero-emissions driving. Based on the Prime trim, Electric Drive comes standard with tech such as rear-parking sensors and satellite navigation.

It’s worth noting that earlier models of the Smart ForTwo don’t offer an extensive array of standard features in this area—for instance, a two-speaker stereo with CD player and auxiliary audio jack are optional in the 2010 model. However, more recent vehicles from 2016 come with automatic climate control, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity. Additional technological add-ons are available for an extra cost, such as:

  • Premium JBL® audio system
  • A smartphone mounting cradle, which allows you to charge your phone, access navigation and adjust audio functions from the Smart app
  • Rain-sensing wipers that automatically keep your windshield clear

Space

The most notable quality of the Smart ForTwo is the vehicle’s unique shape and design. Some drivers claim that the subcompact car has sizable rear blind spots thanks to the rear pillars. Offering just 9.2 cubic feet of cargo space, the Smart ForTwo has a folding passenger seat for additional room. The ForTwo is just under 9 ft long.

Comfort

Although the car is only able to seat two occupants, the Smart ForTwo ensures that those two people are very comfortable. Tall adults are pleased with the lofty head and legroom. The non-electric Smart ForTwo models are fuel-efficient vehicles, and the ForTwo is powered by a 0.9 L three-cylinder turbocharged engine. However, some drivers find that the subcompact’s performance is underpowered.

Frequently asked questions about the Smart ForTwo
