Summary
The Toyota Venza has a history of five-star ratings from the NHTSA for passenger safety. This mid-size crossover SUV is not only safe and reliable, but also very fuel efficient. The Venza’s fuel consumption is roughly 8.5 km/L for city driving and 11 km/L on highways, making it well suited to commuting and short trips. As a bonus, you also get the added utility of towing capacity. Although these vehicles are no longer in production, their discontinuation in 2017 in Canada means the last models are still recent enough that they can compete with modern-day equivalents.
Safety
From its first 2009 model, the Toyota Venza was big on safety. In addition to driver, passenger, front-head, rear-head and front-side airbags, several safety hallmarks come standard across all models:
- Electronic stability control to reduce the likelihood of skidding
- Brake assist to help drivers make emergency stops more effective
- Child safety locks to ensure your little passengers don’t accidentally open a car door
- Anti-lock brakes and driveline traction control to help wheels grip slippery surfaces
- Tire pressure monitoring so you can ensure tires always have optimal grip
- Hill start control for stress-free starts on an incline
Interior
Some drivers feel that the plastic materials in the Venza’s standard cabin can feel a bit low budget, but those after a little more luxury can seek out the LXE and other higher-end trims. Whatever version you choose, you’ll find conveniently placed controls and a central dashboard that has been engineered for optimal visibility.
Technology
A 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes standard on all models (even the 2009 base trim) and responds to voice commands. Because of the Venza’s discontinuation, you won’t find vehicles compatible with newer smartphone systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Useful entertainment features that you can expect across all models, however, include:
- Optional Bluetooth connectivity so you can play your music and accept phone calls hands-free
- Satellite radio for scan-and-seek-free listening
- HD Radio, played through a premium audio system if you opt for the XLE trim
- DVD player and LCD screen in the backseat
Space
The Toyota Venza has plenty of interior storage. You get 36.2 cubic feet of cargo space when the seats are up, and 70.2 cubic feet with all seats folded down. The Venza’s towing capacity is 1,000 lbs with the four-cylinder engine and 3,500 lbs with the six-cylinder engine. This gives you more than enough power and room for tasks like moving away or going on an extended trip. Head and legroom for driver and passengers, even in the back, is also very generous.
Comfort
Some drivers have noted that the Venza’s speed-sensitive steering is too light, though users also report a smooth drive on troublesome terrain, thanks to strut suspension in the front and rear. You can look forward to a high level of responsiveness, even when towing. Air conditioning and automatic climate control are also welcome standard features that add comfort to the drive.
