The Jeep Cherokee debuted in 1974 as a two-door version of the Jeep Wagoneer. With less weight than the 4x4 on which it was based and featuring a large rear storage area, the first-generation Jeep Cherokee was both sporty and practical. The Jeep Cherokee's 1974 sales brochure is the first time that the term "sports utility vehicle" was used to describe a vehicle. The Jeep Cherokee was named the Jeep Liberty in North America for its third and fourth generations to differentiate it from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while staying on sale under its previous name elsewhere.
