The Kia Sorento made its North American debut in 2002 and was, for its first generation, quite a different animal than it is today. The first-generation Kia Sorento featured a pickup truck-based body-on-frame construction, with rear-wheel drive as standard and off-road-focused four-wheel drive available. Engine options included an inline-four and a trio of V6 engines, while the interior had seating for five. The second-generation Kia Sorento debuted in 2011 as a crossover SUV with a unibody construction and front-wheel drive as standard. It now featured better road manners and could seat up to seven passengers.
Moving upmarket
The third-generation Kia Sorento arrived in 2016, again as a crossover with standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. Buyers could choose between a 185 horsepower four cylinder and a 290-horsepower V6 engine, with six- and eight-speed automatic transmissions available. This generation saw the Kia Sorento move upmarket with a more luxurious interior with standard third-row seating, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The fourth generation was launched in 2021 and brought a pair of hybrid powertrains to the options list. The interior received more refinement with new standard and optional technology, while the exterior styling was made more bold. A plug-in hybrid version was launched in 2022.
