The Land Rover Discovery arrived in North America for the 1994 model year with the aim of providing an off-road family vehicle. Designed with a spacious, airy cabin, the Discovery was powered by a 3.8-litre V8 engine. The second-generation Land Rover Discovery debuted in 1999, this time with a stronger chassis and an added third row of seating. Where the second generation was an evolution of the first, the third generation was all-new, dropping the Discovery name to become the Land Rover LR3. Powered by a 4.4-litre V8, the LR3 featured a host of new off-road technology, such as terrain selection settings and hill descent control.

The fourth generation was known as the LR4. This facelifted version of the LR3 was powered by a 5.0-litre V8 and featured improvements to the off-road systems, paired with new suspension and brakes to help on-road handling. The V8 was replaced with a supercharged V6 in 2014—before the fifth generation arrived in 2017 with an all-new aluminum construction, saving 1,000 lbs. of weight. Known as the Land Rover Discovery once again, the fifth generation was given smoother, more aerodynamic styling.
