The Lexus RX debuted in 1998 as the world's first luxury crossover SUV. The RX was a huge success for Lexus, with over 400,000 sold during its first generation from 1998-2003, and remains the highest-selling Lexus in history with over 2,000,000 built across four generations. The first-generation Lexus RX featured a 3.0 litre V6 making 220 horsepower with a four-speed automatic gearbox and front- or all-wheel drive. Launched in 2003, the second-generation RX grew larger and gained a hybrid powertrain option in the form of the RX 400h. Luxury features like air suspension and adaptive cruise control became available for the first time.
Incremental improvements
The third-generation Lexus RX grew in size once again, featuring a V6 engine enlarged to 3.5 litres making 275 horsepower while returning better fuel mileage thanks in part to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The F Sport trim package was added in 2018 with visual upgrades, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a new eight-speed automatic. This gearbox would become standard equipment on the fourth-generation Lexus RX, which was released in 2016 with its V6 engine now producing 295 horsepower. Once again, buyers could choose between front- and all-wheel drive, and adaptive suspension was added to F Sport models.
