The Hyundai Elantra made its debut in 1990 to take on compact sedan offerings from Ford and General Motors. Powered by a Mitsubishi-sourced 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, the first-generation Hyundai Elantra was produced until 1995. The second generation would feature more rounded styling and would be powered by Hyundai's own engines for the first time. The third generation followed in 2000 and was the first Elantra to be built in factories around the world. North American Elantras were powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The fourth-generation Elantra debuted in 2006 with an all-new construction and much curvier styling than previous models.
The Modern Hyundai Elantra
The fifth-generation Elantra debuted in 2010 and was named North American Car of the Year in 2012. The sixth generation arrived in 2015 with more conservative styling, though its grille was expanded to match Hyundai's other models. The seventh-generation Hyundai Elantra debuted in 2020, taking the nameplate upmarket with more technology and exterior styling featuring strong lines and creases. The Hyundai Elantra won North American Car of the Year again in 2021; a performance version, known as the Hyundai Elantra N, was announced to take on the sportiest offerings from other manufacturers.
