The first-generation Hyundai Elantra debuted in 1990 powered by a Mitsubishi 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine. By 1995, it featured a Hyundai-built engine, and its styling was reworked to match the softer lines of the mid-1990s. By its third generation, the Hyundai Elantra was a global car built in factories around the world. North American buyers could only have this version with a 2.0-litre engine. The fourth generation debuted in 2006, again with softer styling lines before Hyundai really pushed the swooping styling boat out with the fifth generation in 2010. The modern era
The Hyundai Elantra's sixth-generation styling pulled back somewhat, swapping the swooping lines of the previous car for handsome, refined shapes and the large front grille seen on Hyundai's crossovers. This theme continued with the debut of the seventh generation in 2020, with the new car further refining the styling of its predecessor. This Hyundai Elantra adopts technology features from the larger Hyundai Sonata and adds a range of available safety features, including forward collision alert and lane keep assist. A high-performance version known as the Hyundai Elantra N brings 276 horsepower and sharper handling.
