Lincoln was founded in 1917 as the Lincoln Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan by Henry and Wilfred Leyland. The company was named after Abraham Lincoln and began its operations by building Liberty V12 engines for use in aircraft during the First World War. Once the war was over the company reorganized its factory and operations to produce cars, with its first vehicle, the Model L, built in 1920. By 1922 the company was struggling to meet demand and was put up for sale, only to be purchased by Henry Ford who got the company for a steal as no other bids were forthcoming. Ford positioned Lincoln as its luxury brand and set about building fine motor cars.
Renowned for luxury
Lincoln set about building a reputation based on performance and luxury with the 1936 Lincoln Zephyr. The car was a big hit and its designers added four inches to its wheelbase to produce the Lincoln Continental; an even more luxurious version that would go on to become the company's most iconic nameplate. The Mark II Continental was launched in 1956 with a base price equivalent to that of a Rolls Royce and announced that Lincoln could match the finest manufacturers for style and quality. The Continental would remain as Lincoln's flagship until 1981 when the Lincoln Town Car assumed the role.
