Subaru WRX history and evolution
The Subaru WRX first debuted as a trim level for the Subaru Impreza. Launched in Japan in 1992, the Subaru Impreza WRX arrived in Canada in 2001 followed by the high-performance Subaru Impreza WRX STI in 2004. Over the years, the Subaru Impreza WRX made a name for itself as a powerful rally car. Then in 2014, Subaru redesigned their popular sport sedan, dropping the Impreza name and introducing the Subaru WRX as a standalone model. While there was a small redesign for 2017, models from 2014 to 2021 are part of the same generation. Newer models will have more updated tech and safety but power and performance are pretty similar. The second generation launches in 2022.
Subaru WRX features to look for
The base 2021 Subaru WRX is equipped with a 2.0-litre 268 horsepower Boxer engine, six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. Sport and Sport-Tech models can be equipped with a fuel-efficient CVT automatic transmission. Race-tuned Subaru WRX STI models feature a 2.5-litre 310 horsepower engine and multi-mode driver-controlled centre differential, allowing you to adjust the car's handling. All models of this four-door sedan offer a spacious interior with seating for five. Look for interior features like performance-inspired front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter and a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration.
