Did you know that if you decide to buy a used car in Ontario, your seller must provide you with a Used Vehicle Information Package or UVIP?
If you're thinking of buying or selling a used car online in this province, here's what you need to know about the UVIP, courtesy of Kijiji Autos:
Do I really have to get a UVIP?
Yes. If you want to legally sell a car in Ontario, you must provide the buyer with this information package. If you're a buyer, you are within your right to request one from the seller before completing the transfer of ownership or proceeding with the sale of the car.
A UVIP is required for all cars, vans, trucks up to 3,000 kg, motorhomes and motorcycles in Ontario.
Drivers should note that a UVIP is not required if the seller is a licenced used car dealer.
Who's responsible for the UVIP?
The responsibility of filling out the UVIP falls to the seller.
Ontario drivers who are importing a used car outside of Canada will have to complete additional forms from the Canada Border Service Agency.
No matter if you're importing a car from overseas or from within Canada but outside Ontario, you are still required to submit the UVI
What's the benefit of buying a UVIP?
Besides it being a requirement, the UVIP makes selling and buying a used car in Ontario simple, as it contains valuable details about the vehicle plus a helpful bill of sale section. It takes the guesswork out of the process.
What's included in the package?
The UVIP contains important information about the car, its history and tax details—basically, all the details you already need to transfer the car to the new owner.
Here's what you can expect to get when you purchase your UVIP:
- Car information, such as its year, make, model and more.
- The car's registration history in Ontario, i.e., a complete history of who owned the vehicle, where they lived and when they owned it.
- Information about any liens on the vehicle.
- The car's estimated wholesale value.
- Information about Retail Sales Tax or RST.
- The car's current condition, e.g. if it has received a Safety Standards Certificate.
How much does the UVIP Ontario cost?
To request a UVIP, sellers must pay $20 CAD. Sellers can make their payments online at the Ontario government website and can expect the UVIP in the mail within five business days.
How do I get it?
It's simple. Go to the government of Ontario's website under Home > Driving and Roads > Vehicle Registration to find the UVIP page and submit an application.
