Ford Explorer history and evolution
The Ford Explorer was introduced in 1991 as a replacement for the Ford Bronco II. Available in two-door and four-door styles and offering seating for six, the original Ford Explorer was equipped with a 155 horsepower engine, standard rear-wheel drive and five-speed manual transmission.
