MG takes its name from the initials of Morris Garages, the premises in Birmingham, England, where William Morris would sell and repair various brands of cars. In 1922 Morris promoted his head salesman, Cecil Kimber, to general manager. Outside of his managerial duties Kimber found time to design special bodies for the cars at Morris Garages, and the first car to wear the MG initials was built in 1923. The cars, also known as "Kimber Specials" were a hit, and MG had to move its production operations to a larger factory. From the early to mid-1930s specially prepared racing versions of MG's cars were available to customers, though this was stopped when MG was officially merged with Morris Motors.
Need for speed
Even with motorsport officially banned by the Morris management in 1939 Lieutenant-Colonel Goldie Gardner set speed records of over 200 mph in a specially-prepared MG Magnette. MG became part of the British Motor Corporation in 1952 and in 1955 the MG MGA sports car was launched. The car was a great styling departure from MG's previous cars and proved to be a hit, with more than 100,000 being built by 1962. Next came the MG MGB which came in convertible and coupe body styles with four, six, and eight-cylinder engines. Over 500,000 MGBs were built between 1962 and 1980.
