The Porsche story began in 1931 when Ferdinand Porsche opened a design and engineering company in Stuttgart, Germany. The company created the Volkswagen Beetle, with the design by Ferdinand and engineering by his son Ferry. Under Ferry's guidance, the company produced its first sports car using its own name. The Porsche 356 debuted on June 8th, 1948, powered by an engine that was based on the Volkswagen Beetle, though it produced more than double the horsepower. The engine was located in the rear of the car; a feature that would go on to become a hallmark of Porsche vehicles.
The 911
Few sports cars are as iconic as the Porsche 911. Designed by Ferry's son, Ferdinand Alexander, the 911 made its debut in 1963 adding rear seats to the 356 formula. The 356 had been a successful race car in its own right, but the 911 took Porsche motorsports efforts to new heights. Featuring widened aerodynamic bodywork and hugely powerful turbocharged engines, Porsche 911s dominated the races they entered. Porsche also built more specialized race cars like the fearsome 917. It's won the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans 19 times, more than any other manufacturer.
