Subaru Outback history and evolution

Since 1995, the Subaru Outback has evolved through six generations. When Subaru first unveiled the Subaru Outback, it was a trim level for the popular Subaru Legacy Wagon. It wasn't until the second generation, 2000 to 2004, that the Subaru Outback became a standalone model. With the start of the third generation in 2005, the Subaru Outback increased in both size and capability, debuting a turbocharged 250-horsepower engine. Fourth-generation wagons, model years 2009 to 2014, saw the introduction of CVT transmission. With the fifth generation's launch in 2015, manual transmission was discontinued and new advanced safety technologies were introduced.

Subaru Outback features to look for

The latest generation of the Subaru Outback is also the largest and the most advanced. Launched in 2020, sixth-generation vehicles feature standard all-wheel drive, touchscreen infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a suite of advanced driver's assistance technologies. The available 260-horsepower turbocharged engine offers a maximum towing capacity of up to 3,500 lbs, while the standard 182-horsepower four-cylinder can tow up to 2,700 lbs. New for 2022, the Subaru Outback Wilderness offers increased off-road capability with its lifted suspension, all-terrain tires and water-resistant upholstery.
