The Toyota Sequoia was launched in 2001 as a full-size SUV, riding on the same platform as the Toyota Tundrapickup truck. Powered by a 4.7-litre V8 engine with 240 horsepower and 315 lb.-ft. of torque, the first-generation Toyota Sequoia featured a tow rating of 6,500 lbs. The big SUV's 11 inches of ground clearance gave it solid off-road ability, with standard rear- or optional four-wheel drive. The Toyota Sequoia featured seating for eight passengers and was revamped in 2005 with new styling and options packages. The V8's output rose to 282 horsepower and fuel economy improved with a new five-speed automatic gearbox, replacing the old four-speed.
More power, more strength
The second-generation Toyota Sequoia launched in 2008, again riding on a full-size pickup platform with a longer wheelbase that offered more interior space. A new 5.7-litre V8 engine was made available with a six-speed automatic transmission, while a new independent rear suspension setup improved on-road handling. Safety and infotainment systems like blind-spot monitoring and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatibility were steadily rolled out before the third generation debuted in 2023. The V8 was dropped in favour of a twin-turbo hybrid V6 paired, with a 10-speed automatic that allows the Toyota Sequoia to tow up to 9,000 lbs.
