The Mercedes-Benz E-Class arrived in 1993 as a facelifted version of the W124 series sedan. The inaugural E-Class was lightweight, aerodynamic, and could be ordered with a wide range of engine choices. It was truly a mid-size executive vehicle, and received a performance punch-up in the form of the 5.0-litre V8-powered E 500; the first E-Class jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. The second generation W210 series debuted in 1995 with distinctive quad headlights and new safety features such as seatbelt tensioners and a new traction control system.
Evolution and refinement
The third-generation W211 E-Class launched in 2002 with even more safety equipment and also received an AMG-tuned version, with the E63 AMG packing a 510 horsepower 6.2 litre V8 mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. The fourth-generation W212 made its debut in 2009, making the switch back to single headlights and adding more safety equipment. Power for the E63S was bumped to 577 horsepower, and like the other generations it came in sedan, wagon, coupe, and convertible body styles. The fifth-generation E-Class arrived with softer styling lines than its predecessors and features a suite of advanced autonomous driving technology.
